Salk'a Energy Cultivation was inspired by the ancient "energetic passes" (pasos energéticos) of the Andes Mountains and developed into a meditation and movement practice by Meredith
Marie Miller in 2007. It is a synergy of stillness, movement, breathwork and
intent--a creative expression of anchoring the spiritual in the physical. It is about doing and being. Its nature is salk'a (meaning "free energy" or "non-domesticated energy" in the Quechua language), and its intent is fluidity--by aligning personal will with Divine Will or the Way as some refer to it. The image is much like the
yielding nature of water, yet it encompasses all five elements (water, earth, wood, fire, metal).
This form of energy cultivation is based on shamanic practices of internal alchemy--brightening the light within and around the body, transmuting the energy and matter of the body, restoring
greater psychological balance and elevating spiritual vitality. Salk'a is about freeing ones awareness and energy from the habits of culture and society. Unique in its expression, it has elements of ancient energetic
practices from Oriental Medicine and Philosophy such as yoga, qi gong,
taiji, kung fu and falun dafa, as well as the South American
energetic and magical passes... with an element of intuitive, spontaneous expression that is unique to each participant. The ancient philosophies of Asia and the
Americas teach that there is no separation, all aspects of
life are One. The Taoist origins of Oriental Medicine and Philosophy as well as South American Shamanism and Cosmology are based on being in alignment with the natural flow of the universe. It all begins by observing nature and animals.
What are the classes like?
Salk'a is taught as two different classes, one focusing more on stillness (Yin) and the other on moving meditation (Yang). They
may be taken in any order according to your preference. There
is an overlap, as each class will contain elements of the other. Both involve individual and group work.
Salk'a Yin:
The essential salk'a energetic passes of the Andes Mountains of Peru are taught through partner and group work. The Yin class has less physical exertion and most of the class involves stillness. The focus is to experience salk'a within through a connection with others. The salk'a energetic passes allow for cultivation of free energy and shifts of perspective including seeing (experiencing beyond form).
Salk'a Yang:
Additional energetic stretching and movements are taught to open the body's energy centers and pathways, allowing for a greater flow of salk'a. This class involves more physical movement. Stretching opens energetic centers and pathways, rhythmic rocking motions calm the Nervous System and allow the mind to let go, wuji (emptiness) forms
bring greater inner silence and circulation of life energy, breathwork moves energy and intent,
spontaneous movement strengthens the connection to the flow of life
force.
